29th March 2016 carved a memory for SPADES. Silver Spades officially made its second performance and a debut for Malam Teater Melayu organized by IIUM Theatre Club. It was a remarkable performance with the play entitled 'Simpang'. This semi-experimental play is acted out by nine casts with the concept of mute theatre and Indonesian poetry blended into one.
The story depicted two main casts who are pen-pals by letters, but never get to meet each other in reality. Ashman and Saiful made an exceptional acting by coordinating very well with lighting and sound effects. As this is a mute theatre, neither one of them uttered a single line except for voice recordings during the play. This situation is narrated perfectly by Firdaus Yusni in Indonesian, who is in fact an Indonesian himself. It is a rare mixture of concepts but Silver Spades proved it to be a potential duo.
The post box shown throughout the story is a symbolism of social media we're using nowadays. As far as the story goes, it portrays a hidden meaning of people's obsession to use social media to communicate nowadays without knowing the real world. The message intends to make people realise the importance of hobnobbing in a real world instead of becoming just a keyboard warrior. It is very disappointing to see that most people are not as what they are on the Internet. The reality is always not so pleasant at all. We meet people in a daily basis. Hence, socializing verbally is far better than virtually.
Although there was a technical problem at first, where the left stagelight couldn't be switched on for a while, but it was a big success. A great night, a great performance, a great satisfaction.
