In conjuction with the Lights of Arts and Culture Festival (LAF), “G É bang” is
a play performed by Theatre House of Silver Spades under the event the Battle of
Theatres (BOT). This programme has aimed at promoting theatrical culture among
IIUM students as well as improving talents in directing, acting and organising projects
for the members through a competition as the event’s name suggests. Not only that,
this play is also intended to promote the culture of being aware and critical of issues
that are relevant to us all while appreciating the beauty of performing arts and
theatrical plays. The theme chosen for this play is politics and social criticism and the
concept of the play is a satire. As such, 5 casts and 15 crew members are involved in
this play.

The BOT was conducted in two days which are on the 16th and 17th of April. 5
production houses participated, with 3 plays being performed on the first day and 2 on
the second day. The last day also included the prize giving ceremony.

All in all, we strongly believed that our play has run smoothly as planned. Our
play has been a success in promoting the aesthetics of performing arts among IIUM
students as well as inculcating the culture of critically viewing and analysing issues in
staging “G É bang”. Thus, it is hoped that our efforts in producing future plays and
programmes in regards to theatre will continually receive full support from the
authorities as well as paving our way towards the accomplishment of spreading the
aesthetics in theatre and arts

GOMBAK, 8 November 2017: Pride, disgust and loneliness – three diverse emotions showing how human beings are flawed and struggling.
In conjunction with ELITS Theatre Night, a play titled “I, Me, You” will be staged this upcoming 9 to 10 November at Experimental Hall, aimed at helping the audience learn and accept themselves while acknowledging the flaws that make them human.
“Unity is a character that can control the consciousness of an entire planet. The concept of how we can practise our freewill and everything united at the same time, hence making us stronger,” said the scriptwriter, Dzulfazreena Annessa Dzulkefli.
The director of the play, Aisyah Khaleeda Rosli, highlighted that by signifying those three emotions, it is hoped that the audience will start embracing the diversity of emotions that they have.
The backstory of the play is family ties and how it relates with the three elements mentioned. The second director, Muhammad Faiz Fahmi Musa, added that they would like to connect with the audience through the play by making sure that it is going to be both entertaining and informative. By doing so, he hoped that people are willing to understand the message behind the story.
The play is also expected to help the audience think and reflect that every great art has its own souls and how every human being has his or her own struggle.
ETN is an annual theatre night event organised by the Secretariat of English Language and Literature (ELITS). It is the highlight of the IIUM Writers and Literary Festival. This year, ETN is bringing ‘Unity in Diversity’ as the theme.
Instead of focusing on the diversity of races, cultures or ethnics which is very common, Dzulfazreena said that she decided to have a different interpretation of diversity and take it to a personal level.
Tickets, on sale at RM6 for students from any university, and RM10 for members of the public, can be purchased at HS Square where ELITS has opened a booth. Students can also get three tickets for RM15.
Any updates will be posted on @IWLFestival twitter page.

GOMBAK, 30 October 2017 – Pride, disgust and loneliness are embodiments of the voices in our heads, further burying us within conflict after conflict.
ELITS Theatre Night (ETN) is back with a theatrical reminder to touch on the importance of being able to feel certain things and why they are all important and acceptable.
The Secretariat of English Language and Literature (ELITS) IIUM will hold their annual theatre night with a theme “Unity in Diversity” on 9 and 10 November at 8.00p.m. at the Experimental Hall where a play called “I, Me, You” will be staged.
Tickets, on sale at RM6 for students from any university, and RM10 for members of the public, can be purchased at HS Square where ELITS has opened a booth. Students can also get three tickets for RM15.
The theatre’s programme manager, Wan Nurnisa, highlighted that there will be a different take on the theme. She said that although “Unity in Diversity” is very familiar and close to our society, the play is addressing issues and conflicts within our own selves with diverse qualities who are yet to find meaning in life.
